Brakes and gears
The two systems that actually stop you and get you up hills. Booked on their own, for when the rest of the bike is fine and you just want it to work properly again.
What is included
Brake pads inspected, and replaced if you agree the cost- Brake cables and outers checked for drag, then tensioned properly
- Lever reach and bite point set to your hands, not to a default
- Rim or rotor surface checked, cleaned and deglazed
- Front and rear gears indexed through every sprocket
- Derailleur hanger checked for straightness with a gauge
- Limit screws and B tension set so the chain cannot go into the spokes
- Cable tension set for how the bike is actually used, not for the showroom
- A road test with a hard stop and a full sweep through the gears
What is not included
None of this is hidden. If your bike needs any of it, we will tell you and price it before we touch anything.
Replacement pads, cables, chains or hangers, quoted before fitting- Hydraulic bleeding, which is £28 per brake and can be done the same visit
- Straightening a hanger that is bent past safe, we fit a new one instead
- Wheel truing, which is £18 a wheel under wheel work
- Anything else the bike turns out to need, we tell you rather than quietly doing it
- Internally routed cable replacement on some frames, which we price separately because it can take an hour on its own
Turnaround
Same day if the bike is in before 10am and needs no parts. Otherwise one working day.
This is the job we most often do while you wait, if you can give us an hour and the bike is basically sound.
A bent hanger is not a gear problem
If the bike has been knocked over or the rear derailleur has been hit, no amount of indexing fixes it. We check the hanger first, because adjusting around a bent one just moves the problem to a different sprocket.
Try it yourself first
Gear indexing is genuinely learnable and needs one screwdriver. Indexing gears at home walks through it in the order that actually works. If it still will not hold after that, the problem is usually the hanger, a stretched cable, or a worn chain, and that is when it is worth booking in.
